Happy New Year! We hope you have had a peaceful and restful festive break, and are ready to tackle all that 2024 will bring. It is perhaps difficult to look ahead with optimism when so many are struggling, both at home and abroad. Times remain tough for many UK businesses: our fingers are firmly crossed that they had enough of a bumper holiday period to see them through a long winter.

In the last quarter of 2023 the themes of high inflation, high interest rates and higher energy bills permeated our writing. Tim, Lucy, Helen and Joanna have all written about aspects of the challenges facing businesses against the rise in insolvencies, and following his comments in the national press in the wake of Wilko’s entry into administration in the summer, you might have seen our own David Steinberg appear as an expert before Parliament’s Business and Trade Committee in late November.
