Ever since the Wealth Tax Commission published its report in December 2020 on the pros and cons of the introduction of a wealth tax, there has been speculation about whether this would be one of the levers the government would seek to pull to raise revenue. Evidently frustrated with the lack of clarity on the issue, the Scottish National Party MP for Glasgow North, Patrick Grady, asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he was going to publish a response to Early Day Motion 420 on introducing a wealth tax. HM Treasury have now responded with a suitably vague answer. However, the Treasury's response was at pains to point out the lack of connection between the Wealth Tax Commission and the government and made reference to incentivising business to drive funds for public services. Perhaps this is as close as we are going to get, for now, to a hefty boot into the long grass for a wealth tax in the UK....

Wealth tax - an evasive answer if ever I heard one...
The priority right now remains to support jobs and the economy. Getting people back to work and encouraging and incentivising businesses to take on new employees and new apprentices ultimately creates the wealth that funds our public services.
