A report from the Pensions Policy Institute has confirmed how imbalanced pension provision is with some couples having 90% of the pensions held by one spouse, most often the husband. The report found that divorced women can have particularly poor pension outcomes. Despite the courts having the power to share pensions in the event of a divorce, it seems that this is not happening as much as it should.
Our family team regularly deals with pensions, indeed it is more unusual to have a divorce that does not involve a pension share. Pensions are highly complex assets. Not everyone sees their value; some women in particular focus on their house, rather than having a pension to provide in their retirement. It is our role to guide crucial decisions made at an emotional time so that divorcing couples can get things right in both the short and the long term.
