What a positive story, and from a rather unexpected source. We wouldn't usually expect the D&I agenda to share headlines with one of the oldest and most conventional institutions in the world - monarchy - but that is the case here.
The English monarchy has modernised a little by ending the system of male primogeniture, under which a younger son could displace an elder daughter in the line of succession. However this news from the Netherlands raises the very welcome prospect that a future monarch will be the child of a same sex couple. From a legal perspective, this may throw up some interesting legal issues for the line of succession but what better way to signal a country's values than this.
